Exhibition Introduction:

A major solo exhibition of Hajime Sorayama's works, "Light, Transparency, and Reflection," presented by the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning (hereinafter referred to as "the Two Museums") in collaboration with the Nanzuka Art Institute, will be held from October 12, 2025 to January 11, 2026 in the Comprehensive Exhibition Hall on the first floor of the Two Museums. This exhibition is the largest solo exhibition to date in South China by Hajime Sorayama, a world-renowned legendary artist of mechanical aesthetics. It presents more than 80 works spanning half a century from the late 1970s to the present, encompassing various media such as painting, installation, sculpture, and new media visual video. Through more than 80 works and a giant outdoor sculpture, the exhibition brings a powerful visual impact, engaging in a multifaceted dialogue with the themes of life and humanity explored in Sorayama's works through the subtle changes of light, transparency, and reflection, deepening artistic reflection.

The colossal 12-meter-tall, several-ton mechanical girl sculpture, which caused a sensation at the 2018 Dior show and in Shanghai, will make its stunning debut in South China. The work will be displayed in the outdoor plazas of both exhibition halls during the exhibition period. With its striking metallic reflections and visual impact, it will create a unique art and cultural landscape in Shenzhen, offering the public an unprecedented art experience and promoting interaction and exchange between contemporary art and the public.

Brief introduction of Hajime Sorayama:

Hajime Sorayama, known as the "Father of Ex Machina," is a legendary artist renowned worldwide for his works that explore the beauty of the human body and machines. His works have profoundly influenced the global film and design industries, pioneering a unique "mechanical aesthetics" art.

In his world-renowned "SEXY ROBOT" series (1978-), the way he incorporated the beauty of the female form into mechanics had a significant influence on the design of robots that followed. The designs for Paul Verhoeven's famous American film "RoboCop" and Thierry Mugler's 1995 collection were also heavily influenced by Hajime Sorayama's work.

The concept design of Sony's entertainment robot dog "AIBO" developed in 1999, the album cover of "Just Push Play" by the world-class rock band Aerosmith in 2001, the collaboration with Kim Jones, then creative director of Dior menswear, in 2018, the collaboration with Weeknd at a concert in 2023, and the collaboration with F1 driver Lewis Hamilton have all become hot topics.

Hajime Sorayama's works are held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the M+ Museum in Hong Kong, and have been widely exhibited around the world through exhibitions such as "Unorthodox" (Jewish Museum, New York, 2015), "Desire" (Larry Gagosian and Jeffrey Deitch, Moore Tower, Miami, 2016), "The Universe and Art" (Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, 2016; ArtScience Museum, Singapore, 2017), "Cool Japan" (Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam, 2018), and "Post Human" (Jeffery Deitch, LA, 2024).
